SAFETY REPS COURSES

These courses for Trade Union Safety Reps are held on Mondays (Stage 1) and Thursdays (Stage 2) between 8:30 & 16:30

Stage 1

This basic course is for all union safety reps and will help you develop the skills, knowledge and confidence you need to perform this essential role in your workplace. The course runs for twelve weeks. As an elected Trade Union Safety Rep you have the legal right to attend this course on full pay under Section 4-(2)(b) of the Safety Reps & Safety Committees (SRSC) Regulations. You will learn how to:
  • identify and establish safety representatives basic rights
  • improves facilities.
  • identify the main hazards and problems in your workplace.
  • find and use the information about safety standards in your workplace.
  • undertake workplace inspections.
  • develop organisations for safety.
  • develop effective procedures for taking up problems.

Stage 2

For safety representatives who have completed the Introduction Health and Safety course and have had further practical experience since then. the course builds upon basic skills and issues developed on the Stage 1. The course runs for twelve weeks. As well as the core activities your group will choose topics to study in detail on the first day of the course, this could be anything from noise to office safety, lifting regs to stress. You will also undertake a project to make real improvements to the safety of your members back at work. As an elected Trade Union Safety Rep you have the legal right to attend this course on full pay under Section 4-(2)(b) of the Safety Reps & Safety Committees (SRSC) Regulations. You will learn about:
  • detailed health and safety law.
  • comunicating with members.
  • negotiating improvements in health and safety.
  • analysis of workplace hazards experience by course members.
  • proposed solutions to such workplace problems.
