The Training Course

The Disability Champions@Work project is for members of all TUC affiliated trade unions. Once identified, potential Champions will attend a training course to equip them with the knowledge, skills and tools to carry out their role. The course covers:-
  • The Disability Discrimination Act
  • Case Law
  • Understanding the Social Model of Disability
  • Interviewing members
  • Understanding ‘Reasonable Adjustments’
  • Negotiating Adjustments
  • Problem solving
  • Understanding Access to Work funding
  • Conducting and audit against an ‘two ticks’ criteria
  • Specific targeted research
  • Developing improvement plans
During the training Champions will establish the role within their workplace by carrying our workplace activities involving their colleagues at work, other trade union reps and their management teams. The training course is accredited by the National Open College Network. It is provided free of charge to trade union members and delivered in approved TUC centres. The standard course format is five 6 hour days over five weeks (5 consecutive Mondays for example). Other formats are available at various centres
