2003 - 2007, a five year project
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Disability Champions @ Work was conceived in July 2002 and born in January 2003. This exciting project - initially designed by the Amicus Disability
Employment Rights National Advisory Committee - won £50,000
of targeted funding as part of the European Year of Disabled People.
Amicus was only UK trade union to have been awarded this funding.
The project started as a vision; to create the trade union "Disability Champion". Once identified and trained these people would:-
- Pick up disability related D's/G's
- Give advice of adjustments and funding
- Be aware of best practice
- Influence recruitment procedures
- Recruit disabled workers into the union
- Liaise with external bodies
- Carry out audits
- Advise other union officers / members
Now the project is over this vision has become a reality. More than 1000 people have become Disability Champions. They come from 39 different trade unions and are located in all regions of England, in Scotland, in Wales and both Northern Ireland and the Republic. The five day training course has been adopted and published by the TUC and is now available in many centres around the country.
The former project worker, Dave Parr, continues to fund and maintain this website for the benefit of the Champions and the members they support in their workplaces.
