I am an Employment Officer with Scope, delivering the Government's WORKSTEP programme. This scheme helps people with a disability to gain and retain employment. It is also there to support people who develop a disability whilst in work. |
I create a partnership between the employer, the employee and myself to make any adjustments necessary in the workplace. I already perform the role of Disability Champion as an Employment Officer and am happy to apply my knowledge and experience in a wider field. This is a very worthwhile service and I hope to be able to assist people in the North East of England who are not members of the WORKSTEP programme.

I discovered this role at a forum in durham where i heard Dave Parr. I thought it sounded very interesting and as i knew nothing about disabled issues i said to myself why not see if i can do something to help any disabled colleagues that i may meet.

The TUC sent out course information and I attempted to enrol on the previous course that was cancelled. I received information that course was to be ran again and enrolled. I have dealt with Disability issues within our Union Group for a few years now, having a disability myself. I needed to get a deeper insight into how individual’s needs could be met, and how best to find information on those needs. This course has given me those means. The training and now the network that has now been developed will be the best tool I have ever been given. This was an excellent course ran by a professional trainer.
Gateshead - David Legender Unite
I found out about the course on the Unite website. Well firstly I am disabled and make no bones about it. I am the Unite disability rep on my site. Also I am on the advisory panel for the Disabled Employee Network within Newcastle Upon Tyne City Council. I can speak from first hand experience of disability and the way it affects peoples lives. I know how it 20 plus years ago how it effected mine, I was utterly devastated my world literally fell to pieces no job nothing. In those days there was very little kicking around regarding Disability Rights now we have quite a lot through statute and other laws and the help of the unions. In the past I have found that what a company says that it will do, and what it actually carries out are two different things. This must change.
It is my honest hope that by becoming a Disability Champion that I can make a difference. I love helping people and I am passionate about disability in all aspects, and also the way disabled people are treat in society today. I believe that we are gradually breaking down stigmas which still exist. Someday we will get there - someday!

I was recruited by Dave Parr at the TUC Disability Conference. I have not always had an interest in disability until I became disabled myself. I feel that as someone supported me in the past I should give something back and this seemed the best way.

The course is quite comprehensive but I would like to see a link from the website to a list of successful Employment tribunal case law.

As someone with rheumatoid arthritis I obviously have a personal interest in disability. I get a bit annoyed at being told what I can't do rather than the emphasis being on what I can do! Disabled people are already at a disadvantage in our society and this needs to be addressed at every level, at home, school, the workplace - everywhere.
Newcastle - Allie McCormick PCS
I work for Newcastle College. I'm interested in promoting awareness within the workplace.

I work for social services as a full time released branch officer in Newcastle upon Tyne. I found out about this project whilst studying on a TUC course (employment law). I wanted to become a Champion because of blatant inequalities in employment procedures (i.e. sickness monitoring). I have a special interest in employment for people with a learning disability. I wish I'd known about this project before now !

I’m George. I found out about this course via a flyer and a discussion over a pint (more than one actually)I believe that this is a natural 'follow on' from my role as a ULR and TU Safety Rep. My first thoughts; Why not sooner and why not legal backing the same as ULRs & Safety Reps?

During my attendance of a H&S course at the college I became aware of the "1 day taster" on offer. I have been an advocate for my ex-wife and mother, both of whom have profound physical "disabilities", and for numerous others with varying conditions, over a period of many years. I would like to be able to extend my ability to offer help to others, to my workplace (and perhaps beyond ..... no I don't mean the after-life!!). Yeah! That the whole world never mind our society, needs a ****** good shake up as far as making our planet a place of true equality is concerned, and nowhere is it clearer than when looking at the massive lack of parity and understanding with regard to the needs of people whom are differently abled. And by the way, I don't think the D.D.A. goes far enough to protect the interests of such a large (and growing) group of people!

I got involved with this because it was the only way the TUC were catering for Disability. Previous Disability Discrimination courses were cancelled through lack of numbers. The course has made an interesting start, colleagues are all coming to the issues with the best of attitudes.

Hopefully we'll be able to work together to improve things.
