Workers' Memorial Day 2008On International Workers Memorial Day 2008, The Irish Congress of Trade Unions held a seminar to remember all those workers who have died or been injured during the course of their work at the Unite office in Belfast. The meeting went very well and hopefully will lead to an increase in the numbers of Champions in Wales and get a training course organised to service both the North and the South of the country.ICTU Disability Seminar - DublinOn November 2nd and 3rd The Irish Congress of Trade Unions held their first joint seminar on disability between their committee in the Republic and the Northern Ireland Committee. The actual number is 759, and they come from 31 different trade unions. Of these people 46% are disabled people, 40% are women and 13% list their ethnic origin as something other than "white british".The training course has been re-written and is being delivered at colleges all over the british isles. With 62 tutors now briefed to deliver the course, and it now being available online too, the potential for further growth is vast. Many thanks to everyone for their efforts in this achievement. Champion Shaun's Grand Decent!Most people celebrate their 60th birthday with a pie and pint down the local pub, not PCS Disability Champion Shaun Peare. He did a parachute jump on September 1st in aid of Breast Cancer Campaign. His target for the sponsorship money raised was £1000 and we’re pleased to be able to report that today, October 11th, he reached that figure! Project Update IrelandFollowing on from the introduction of the Disability Champions project in Ireland in June of this year, the first round of training will be taking place in Dublin over five Tuesdays in October. Unions have been approached to nominate representatives to become Disability Champions. Those unions that have not been included in the first round will be approached to make nominations in the second round due to take place in early 2008. The course will also be run in Belfast over five Tuesdays in April, and attendance on this course is through direct application to the Northern Irish Congress of Trade Unions. Delegates were able to find out about the project and try the website in the exhibition area. Rt Hon Ruth Kelly MP mentioned us and our work in her speech to the Women's Conference and the Disabled Members Conference carried motion 6 calling for us to pursue the project further in Ireland. 7 people became Champions whilst there, others took away forms to complete. The project was very well received. We will be helping the T&G to integrate and develop Disability Champions within their structures.NORTHERN REGION TUCDisability Champions were back in the North East on Tuesday 15th June when the TUC Northern Region Disability Forum met at the Gateshead Civic Centre. This was a very productive meeting that will rekindle activities on Tyneside.CHAMPIONS IN CONWY COUNCIL?On Friday May 28th 2004 Conwy Council held a meeting to look at their provision for disabled people. Disability Champions were there and all agreed the project would be a big help. The next step is to get hold of council TU reps. Watch this space.NEXT STOP... The GPMU!Monday March 29th 2004 saw the project on the road again, this time to the GPMU's national equalities committee at their head office in Bedford.
