PRESS RELEASE - 10th December 2002

AMICUS SECURE EUROPEAN FUNDING FOR GROUNDBREAKING NEW WORK

2003 is the European Year of Disabled People. To support the European Year, grants of up to £50,000 were made available for national projects and we are delighted to inform you that we have successfully bid for, and secured, funding for our project, Disability Champions @ Work.

The UK theme for projects is “Promoting Rights and Participation”. Our project will identify and train trade union representatives to become Disability Champions in workplaces. These people will provide advice and guidance to trade union representatives, members and employers. Their role will ensure that disabled employees and potential employees will enjoy genuine equality of opportunity and that their contribution to the business is recognised and respected. Regional conferences will be organised for Amicus MSF Section activists in that area. Once identified, the Disability Champions will take a TUC approved training course to give them the skills and knowledge to help you, the disabled workers in our union.

If you feel that any of your trade union representatives would be interested in becoming Disability Champions please ask them to contact the project worker, Dave Parr, on 01482 382512 or by email to dave@tradeunionstudies.com

DERNAC NEWS will keep you informed of the developments as this exciting project develops. Who knows, in years to come we may see legal rights for trade union disability champions, just as we are now seeing rights for Learning Reps; a role which was only defined a few years ago.
