The Taunton Conference |

The project's second visit to the South West took place on a glorious spring day at Taunton's Brewhouse Theatre in the shadow of the Ian Botham pavilion.
With Linda ill and Dorothy summoned to London this event was hosted by Dave Parr and regional officer, Arthur Taylor. Arthur chaired the seminar of delegates from Rolls Royce and RAF Fairford amongst others. The small group led to an informal but very useful event. Dave gave the presentation of the project history and the achievements so far. It was then a pleasure to welcome back Margie Woodward from Scope. Margie was the first speaker from Scope to attend a 'Champions conference; a link which has now become a partnership as we seek funding from the Department of Trade and Industry for the next phase of our work. Margie explained Scope's position of aiming for 20% disabled employees by 2007. "By 2010 over half of the UK population will be aged 50 or over, if that doesn't focus people on disability issues I don't know what will" she said explaining how adjustments for disabled people benefit everyone. New project leader Dorothy Fogg arrived back from London in time to introduce herself to the group and contribute to the plenary discussion. The WorkshopsAs this was only an afternoon conference rather than a full day there was only time for one workshop. Delegates discussed how Disability Champions could work in their workplaces. Many issues came out in a productive feedback discussion. Rolls Royce had already pledged their support by sponsoring the first event in Bristol. Others felt that their employers would get onboard if they felt they had to or if there was something in it for them. The task now is to make it happen. There was a great deal of enthusiasm that, with the support of the project team and the other Champions, will translate into real improvements for the members the delegates represent.
